Affinity on Linux: does it work in 2026?
Not officially, but unofficial builds run it. Affinity by Canva is made for Windows and macOS only. Community projects use Wine to run Affinity v3 on Linux, and opening, saving, and exporting files are reported to work. Canva sign-in and the built-in help panels are the weak spots, and Canva does not support any of it. If you would rather stay native, GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, and Scribus cover the same ground.
Four ways to use Affinity on Linux
Every row is checked against the sources at the bottom of the page. “Experimental” means it can work, but Canva does not support it and you may hit bugs.
| Option | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux app | No: Not available | Affinity is made for Windows and macOS. Its global marketing lead told TechCentral that a Linux port is “being discussed seriously internally”, but no version or date has been announced. |
| Ready-made AppImages and installers | Partly: Experimental | Community projects use Wine to run Affinity v3. Offline use is reported to work; Canva sign-in and the built-in help panels are the weak spots. Canva does not support it. Compare the projects |
| Manual Wine setup (Bottles, Lutris, Heroic) | Partly: For tinkerers | The AffinityOnLinux guides cover Wine 10.17 or newer and several launchers. Their own known-issues list says sign-in does not work and UI settings do not save. |
| Windows virtual machine | Unknown: Not documented | We found no project documenting Affinity in a VM. It avoids Wine, but not graphics limits. Details |

Latest Affinity on Linux updates
No news posts yet. We post here when Canva or the community projects announce something that changes the status table.
Which Affinity on Linux project should you use?
Several community projects exist, and they are not equally healthy. We read each project’s README and recent activity on Oct 1, 2026. None is made by Canva, and we have not audited their code.
| Project | State | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Linux Affinity Installer | Partly: Maintainer stepping back | AppImage and installer script for Affinity v2 and v3. Its README says all future work is halted while the maintainer builds their own app, yet contributors’ fixes were still being merged on October 1, 2026, including Ubuntu 26.04 fixes and a Canva sign-in fix for v3 (see commits). |
| Affinity Infinity | Yes: Active | AppImage with a custom Wine 11.12 build and vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12. It downloads Affinity from official sources and keeps it updated. Latest release we saw: September 27, 2026. Known issue: help and other web panels do not open, and sign-in is likely affected, because WebView2 crashes under Wine 11.0 and 11.12. |
| AffinityOnLinux guides | Yes: Active | Step-by-step guides for Wine 10.17 or newer, Lutris, Heroic, Bottles, and Rum, plus an unofficial AppImage installer and Nix packages. Known issues listed: sign-in does not work, and UI settings do not save (a workaround is documented). |
Does Affinity work on Linux? What reports say
Because we have not run Affinity under Wine ourselves, this section reports what others found, with dates, so you can judge how current each finding is.
- October 2025. Canva launched Affinity as one free app that combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout, for Windows and macOS (TechRadar, ProVideo Coalition). It merges the former Photo, Designer, and Publisher apps.
- November 2025. Affinity’s global marketing lead said Linux is “being discussed seriously internally” and is one of the top requests from users (TechCentral, Open Source For You). No version, date, or roadmap followed that we could find.
- January 2026. OMG! Ubuntu covered an unofficial AppImage bundling Affinity 3.0.2 with a preconfigured Wine 10.x. Signing in to Canva did not work, but offline use did, and views built on WebView2, such as the help system and the welcome screen with templates, had rendering problems.
- Hands-on, AppImage method. It’s FOSS tried Affinity Designer and reported it ran without stuttering or graphical artifacts, with file saving, opening, and export working. The automated-script method showed black window surfaces unless the window was maximized. Advanced filters and plugins were not tested.
- September 2026. The projects above kept moving: Affinity Infinity shipped a release on September 27, and the Linux Affinity Installer received Ubuntu 26.04 fixes and an Affinity v3 install fix.
- October 1, 2026. The Linux Affinity Installer merged a fix so the Canva sign-in callback reaches Affinity v3. Its author tested Ubuntu 26.04, Wine 10.10, and Affinity 3.3.0.4850. It applies to Wine 9 and 10; Wine 11.12 needs extra components the fix does not cover. We could not confirm whether it is in a packaged release yet.
Known problems and workarounds
- Canva sign-in. Historically broken. The fix above is new and covers Wine 9 and 10 only. The apps work offline in the meantime, per OMG! Ubuntu.
Best Affinity alternatives that run on Linux
If you do not need Affinity itself, these tools run natively. Affinity is one app; on Linux you will usually pair two or three.

Sources: GIMP 3.2 release notes, Krita, Inkscape, Scribus, and the Linux Magazine feature on Affinity. We found no native support for Affinity’s own file formats in these tools, so export from Affinity to PSD, SVG, PDF, or TIFF first. Also see our page.
Affinity is free from Affinity’s own site, so there is never a reason to use a cracked copy or a third-party “Affinity for Linux” download; those are very likely malware. Wine AppImages are big programs that run with your user’s permissions. Take them only from the project repositories named on this page, and skip archived or unmaintained builds.
Which Linux distro for Affinity?
The Linux Affinity Installer’s README lists Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Pop!_OS, PikaOS, and openSUSE as supported, and a recent fix was tested on Ubuntu 26.04. These four are the most widely used from that list in our data. Order follows the live popularity ranking. For the native alternatives, any distribution works.

Affinity on Linux: common questions
Is there an Affinity for Linux?
No. Affinity by Canva is made for Windows and macOS. Canva’s Affinity team has said a Linux version is being discussed seriously, but nothing has been announced. Community projects can run the Windows version on Linux through Wine, unofficially.
Can you run Affinity on Linux with Wine?
Yes, unofficially. Community AppImages and installer scripts run Affinity v3 under Wine, and reviewers report that opening, saving, and exporting files work. Canva sign-in and the built-in help panels have been the main problems, and Canva does not support this setup.
Does Affinity work on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Fedora?
The Linux Affinity Installer lists Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Pop!_OS, PikaOS, and openSUSE, and says it does not support Bazzite or Manjaro. A recent fix was tested on Ubuntu 26.04. Results depend on the project, Wine version, and graphics driver more than on the distribution.
Is Affinity free?
Affinity says its current app is free to download and use, with optional paid Canva features such as AI tools, and reports say a free Canva account is needed to get it. Check the official Affinity site for current terms, because they are Canva’s to change.
Can I sign in to Canva in Affinity on Linux?
It has been the main problem. In January 2026 the unofficial AppImage could not sign in, and offline use worked. On October 1, 2026, the Linux Affinity Installer merged a fix for Affinity v3 on Wine 9 and 10. We have not tested it, and Wine 11.12 needs extra components the fix does not cover.
Will Affinity come to Linux?
Affinity’s global marketing lead said a Linux port is being discussed seriously internally and is one of the top user requests. We found no announcement, date, or roadmap.
What is the best Affinity alternative for Linux?
It depends on the app. GIMP 3.2 or Krita for Affinity Photo, Inkscape for Affinity Designer, and Scribus for Affinity Publisher. They are native Linux apps, but they are separate programs, not one unified suite like Affinity.
Can GIMP, Krita, or Inkscape open Affinity files?
We found no support for Affinity’s own formats (.afphoto, .afdesign, .afpub) in GIMP, Krita, or Inkscape. To move work between Affinity and Linux apps, export from Affinity to an open format such as PSD, SVG, PDF, or TIFF.
How we researched this page
- What we did. We read each community project’s README, releases, issues, and recent commits and pull requests on Oct 1, 2026, and compared them with reporting from OMG! Ubuntu, It’s FOSS, TechRadar, and TechCentral. Every claim above links its source.
- What we did not do. We have not run Affinity under Wine or in a virtual machine ourselves, and we have not audited any project’s code. There are no benchmarks or hands-on results on this page, and we say so where a statement is our own reasoning.
- How fresh it is. Last checked Oct 1, 2026. These projects change weekly, so the dates matter more than any claim of “works”. Affinity’s own site and several press pages could not be opened directly from our research environment, so statements from them come from excerpts of the cited articles. Check the originals for current terms.
