Football Life 2027 on Linux and Steam Deck: does FL27 work?

Not natively, but it should run with Proton. SP Football Life 2027 (FL27) is SmokePatch’s Windows-only football game built on the PES 2021 engine, released on Nov 1, 2026. Its predecessor, Football Life 2026, already runs on Linux with GE-Proton, and FL27 is expected to work the same way with one new requirement: .NET Desktop Runtime 10. Here is how to set it up and fix the known problems.

What is Football Life 2027?

SP Football Life is a PC football game from the modding group SmokePatch that, in its own words, aims to continue the career modes of the retired PES series. Each season gets a new version: FL23 through FL26 so far, and FL27 for the 2026/27 season, which SmokePatch describes as bringing updated rosters, a new lighting system, gameplay changes, a new theme with six extra colour palettes and a controller-button selector.

The competition changes include a 48-team World Cup, a 16-team Copa América, an 18-team Belgian league without playoffs and a 30-team MLS. SmokePatch held back the new UEFA formats for a later version because they were not yet stable.

It installs as its own game, with its own setup program and start app, and downloads come from the SmokePatch website (with sponsored links) or Patreon (ad-free links). SmokePatch says only releases on its site and Patreon are official.

Football Life 2027 system requirements

SmokePatch has not posted separate FL27 numbers on its release pages. These are the published requirements for Football Life 2026, on the same engine. On Linux, replace “Windows” with a distro that has a working Vulkan driver, since Proton translates DirectX 11 to Vulkan.

How to install Football Life on Linux

The most complete write-up is spfl26-pes2021-linux, a community install script and guide for FL26. Its author reports a full match at 1080p on Zorin OS 18.1 with an RTX 4070 Ti and an Xbox controller. It is not made by SmokePatch or distro.watch, and an FL27 version does not exist yet, so read the script before running it. The steps below are the same method.

  • Step 1: download from SmokePatch only. Get the base game parts and any updates from pessmokepatch.com and keep the parts together in one folder, with the Data folder next to the setup exe.
  • Step 2: install GE-Proton. The guide uses GE-Proton11-3. The easy way is ProtonUp-Qt from Flathub (flatpak install flathub net.davidotek.pupgui2), then restart Steam. Older Proton and Wine 8 fail on the start app.
  • Step 3: run the installer in a Proton prefix. In Steam, choose Add a Game → Add a Non-Steam Game, pick the setup exe, then in its Properties → Compatibility force GE-Proton and launch it. Or let the community script build the prefix for you (./install.sh --check --source ~/Downloads previews what it will do).
  • Step 4: install to a C: path. Use C:\Games\… or the installer’s default under C:\Program Files (x86). Avoid Z:\ paths, which the guide says confuse Sider, the mod loader. Install every update into the same folder, in order.
  • Step 5: point the shortcut at the start app (for FL26 it was “FL 2026 start.exe”) and add the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="lsteamclient=d" %command%. Without it the game shows an ISteamUser error or a black screen.
  • Step 6 (FL27): add .NET Desktop Runtime 10 if asked. FL27’s Starter and Switcher moved to .NET Desktop Runtime 10. If the start app complains, download Microsoft’s Windows x64 desktop runtime installer and run it inside the same prefix, for example with protontricks-launch --appid followed by the shortcut’s app ID and the installer file.
  • Step 7: close Steam before playing if your gamepad does nothing, or turn off Steam Input for the shortcut. Steam takes exclusive control of the controller otherwise.

The base game’s engine has a good track record under Proton: eFootball PES 2021 Season Update on ProtonDB is rated Gold from 46 reports, trending Platinum, at the time of writing (October 2026). Football Life itself is not a Steam game, so it has no ProtonDB page.

Football Life 2027 on Steam Deck

Nobody has published an FL27 or FL26 Steam Deck test yet. The Deck runs Windows games through the same Proton, so the method above should apply, although performance on its handheld GPU is untested: do the install in Desktop Mode, add the start app to Steam as a non-Steam game with GE-Proton forced, then play from Gaming Mode. Because the Deck’s own controls go through Steam Input, the desktop advice to close Steam does not apply; if buttons do nothing, try a different controller layout for the shortcut. We will update this section when there is a confirmed report.

There is no official Linux, Android or console version of Football Life 2027.

SmokePatch publishes official releases only on pessmokepatch.com and its Patreon. Treat any “FL27 Linux build”, APK or repack from elsewhere as untrusted, and check the community script’s code before you run it.

Can you play Football Life 2027 on Linux?

There is no Linux version, but you can run the Windows version with Proton. Football Life 2026 has been documented running on Linux with GE-Proton11-3, and FL27 uses the same engine. FL27 is due on Nov 1, 2026; we will confirm it on Linux after release.

Does Football Life 2027 work on Steam Deck?

Probably, through the same Proton setup, but nobody has published a Steam Deck test yet. The community Linux script installs everything inside the home folder without sudo, which is what SteamOS needs. If the built-in controls do nothing in game, try turning off Steam Input for the shortcut.

When is the Football Life 2027 release date?

SmokePatch lists SP Football Life 2027 Version 1 for Nov 1, 2026 on its upcoming releases page, after moving the target from mid-October to early November.

Do I need PES 2021 to play Football Life 2027?

SmokePatch ships Football Life as its own game, with its own installer and launcher built on the PES 2021 engine. Its install guide for FL26 asks for a new folder and does not mention a PES 2021 install. The Linux setup on this page does not use a Steam copy of PES 2021.

What does FL27 need that FL26 did not?

SmokePatch says the FL27 Starter and Switcher now use Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 10. On Windows you get a prompt to install it. Under Proton you may have to run Microsoft’s .NET Desktop Runtime 10 (x64) installer inside the same prefix, for example with protontricks-launch.

Why does my controller not work in Football Life on Linux?

Steam Input takes exclusive control of the gamepad, so the game sees the controller but receives no button presses. Close Steam before playing, or turn off Xbox controller support in Steam’s controller settings (or Steam Input for that shortcut).

Why is Football Life stuck on a black screen or showing an ISteamUser error?

Proton injects its lsteamclient bridge, which intercepts the Steam calls the game answers itself. Set WINEDLLOVERRIDES="lsteamclient=d" before launching; in Steam that is the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="lsteamclient=d" %command%.

Is Football Life 2027 on ProtonDB?

No, because it is not a Steam game. Its base, eFootball PES 2021 Season Update, is rated Gold on ProtonDB, with Platinum as the trending rating, at the time of writing (October 2026).
