GTA 6 on Linux and Steam Deck: can you play it?
Not natively, not yet. GTA 6 launches on Nov 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version, so there is nothing for Linux, Proton, or the Steam Deck to run. If you own one of those consoles, you can already stream it to a Linux PC or Steam Deck. This page tracks every change as it happens.
GTA 6 platform status
Where GTA 6 runs today and what is still unknown. Every row is checked against official sources, listed at the bottom of the page.
| Platform | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes: Launches Nov 19, 2026 | Standard and Ultimate editions. Pre-load starts Nov 12, 2026. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes: Launches Nov 19, 2026 | Same date and editions as PS5. |
| Windows PC | No: Not announced | Rockstar lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC date, store, or system requirements yet. |
| Linux (Steam + Proton) | No: Not possible yet | Proton runs Windows PC games, so nothing can run until a PC version exists. |

| Stream from a console to Linux | Partly: Confirm at launch | Open-source apps stream PS5 and Xbox games to Linux. Sony notes that some games block Remote Play; we will confirm GTA 6 on launch day. |

Latest GTA 6 updates
No news yet. We post here as soon as Rockstar, Sony, Microsoft, or Valve announces anything about a PC version, the Steam Deck, or anti-cheat.
How to play GTA 6 on Linux or Steam Deck today
The only way to play GTA 6 on a Linux PC or Steam Deck is to stream it from a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S that you own. The console runs the game and your Linux machine shows the picture and sends your controller input. Sony’s and Microsoft’s official apps do not list Linux as supported, but two open-source apps fill the gap. Neither is affiliated with Sony or Microsoft.
From a PS5: chiaki-ng
chiaki-ng is an open-source PlayStation Remote Play client for PS4 and PS5 that runs on Linux and the Steam Deck.
- On the PS5: turn on Remote Play in Settings → System → Remote Play.
- On Linux: install chiaki-ng from Flathub, for example with flatpak install flathub io.github.streetpea.Chiaki4deck, or from your software center.
- On a Steam Deck: switch to Desktop Mode, install chiaki-ng from the Discover store, then add it to Steam as a non-Steam game so it starts from Gaming Mode.
- Register your console in chiaki-ng with your PlayStation account details, following the project’s setup guide, then connect.
From an Xbox: Greenlight
Greenlight is an open-source client for Xbox home streaming and Xbox Cloud Gaming that runs on Linux and the Steam Deck, and is available on Flathub.
- On the Xbox: enable remote features in Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features, and keep the console in sleep mode rather than fully off.
- On Linux or Steam Deck: install Greenlight, sign in with your Microsoft account, and pick your console.
Streaming needs a fast, stable connection; Microsoft suggests 5 GHz Wi-Fi or at least 10 Mbps. A wired connection for the console helps most. Sony notes that some games do not allow Remote Play, so we will confirm GTA 6 on launch day and update the status table above.
Will GTA 6 work on Linux when it comes to PC?
Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through its Proton compatibility layer, which also powers Steam on desktop Linux, so a PC version of GTA 6 has a good chance of running, at least in single-player. The real risk is anti-cheat.
GTA V shows how it can go. In 2024 Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online without enabling its Proton support. According to Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ, Steam Deck players can still play the story mode but not GTA Online, and GamingOnLinux reported the same for desktop Linux. BattlEye can support Proton, but only when the publisher turns it on.
Any “GTA 6 PC download”, “beta”, “early access”, or “Linux port” is fake and very likely malware. Buy only from the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, or a trusted retailer. Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc.

GTA 6 on Linux: common questions
Can you play GTA 6 on Linux?
Not natively. GTA 6 launches on Nov 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version, so there is nothing for Linux or Proton to run. If you own one of those consoles, you can stream the game to a Linux PC with open-source Remote Play apps such as chiaki-ng (PS5) or Greenlight (Xbox).
Will GTA 6 be on Steam Deck?
Not at launch, because there is no PC version. The Steam Deck runs Windows PC games through Proton, so a future PC release may run there, especially the single-player story, but Rockstar has not said anything about Steam Deck. Until then, you can stream GTA 6 from your own PS5 or Xbox to the Deck.
When is the GTA 6 PC release date?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version or date. Its previous PC versions arrived after the console releases: about 7 months later for GTA IV, about a year for Red Dead Redemption 2, and about 19 months for GTA V. That is a pattern, not a promise.
Will GTA 6 have anti-cheat that blocks Linux?
Rockstar has not said. The precedent is GTA V: in 2024 Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online without enabling its Proton support, so Linux and Steam Deck players can play the story mode but not GTA Online. BattlEye itself can support Proton; it is the publisher’s choice.
Is there a GTA 6 download for PC or Linux?
No. GTA 6 is only sold for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Any site offering a PC or Linux download, beta, or early access is a scam and very likely malware.
Can I stream GTA 6 from my PS5 to Linux?
Sony’s official PS Remote Play app has no Linux version, but chiaki-ng, an open-source Remote Play client, runs on Linux and Steam Deck and is available on Flathub. Sony notes that some games do not support Remote Play, so check GTA 6 once it launches.
Can I play GTA 6 through cloud gaming on Linux?
Not as far as has been announced. Services like GeForce NOW need a PC version, and neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced GTA 6 for cloud streaming. Streaming from a console you own is the option that exists today.
Which Linux distro will be best for GTA 6?
When a PC version exists, gaming-focused distributions such as Bazzite, CachyOS, or SteamOS on the Steam Deck are the natural choices, because they ship recent graphics drivers and make Steam and Proton easy to set up. We will test and update this page when it is out.
