Photoshop on Linux: does it work in 2026?
Not officially, but it is now possible. Adobe makes Photoshop only for Windows and macOS. Since January 2026, patched builds of Wine can install and run Photoshop 2021 and 2025 on Linux, but the setup is experimental, unsupported by Adobe, and has open bugs. For paid work, a Windows virtual machine is the more predictable route. For everything else, GIMP 3.2 and Krita run natively.
Four ways to use Photoshop on Linux
Every row is checked against the sources at the bottom of the page. “Experimental” means it can work, but Adobe does not support it and you may hit bugs.
| Option | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux app | No: Not available | Adobe’s Photoshop system requirements cover Windows and macOS. We found no announcement of a Linux version. |
| Photoshop 2021 or 2025 in patched Wine | Partly: Experimental | Community patches let the Creative Cloud installer run, so Photoshop installs and launches. Adobe does not support it, and bugs are still open. Details |
| Windows virtual machine with WinApps | Partly: Possible, heavier | Photoshop runs inside a real Windows VM and appears in a window on your Linux desktop. WinApps lists Photoshop as supported. Details |
| Photoshop on the web | Unknown: Not listed for Linux | Adobe’s requirements for Photoshop on the web list Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS, not Linux. Details |

Latest Photoshop on Linux updates
No news posts yet. We post here when Wine, Adobe, or the patch developers announce something that changes the status table.
Can you install Photoshop on Linux with Wine?
Wine runs Windows programs on Linux without Windows. For years Photoshop could not be installed this way because the Adobe Creative Cloud installer failed. That changed in January 2026: a developer known as PhialsBasement published Wine patches that make the installer work, and Photoshop 2021 and 2025 were reported to install and launch (Phoronix, OMG! Ubuntu).
What changed in 2026
- The cause. Reports say the installer had not worked since 2018 because it relies on an embedded Internet Explorer component that Wine could not handle. The patches fix gaps in Wine’s MSHTML (HTML and JavaScript) and MSXML3 (XML) code.
- Wine-Staging. Wine-Staging 11.1 added the patches, and Wine-Staging 11.2 added more.
- Upstream Wine. Phoronix reported that one piece, the MSHTML XMLSerializer, was merged into Wine ahead of Wine 11.3, and that three more patches were still needed. We could not confirm from the sources available to us which of the rest have reached a stable Wine release by Oct 1, 2026; the Wine bug report is the place to check.
- The developer’s fork. The wine-adobe-installers fork was still receiving commits in August 2026, including a rebuild on Proton 10.0 sources on August 12, according to its commit history.
What still goes wrong
The fork’s issue tracker is the most honest guide to the rough edges. When we checked on Oct 1, 2026, open reports included Photoshop 2024 crashing on a USER32.dll call, the Photoshop 2025 menu bar drawing as a solid white strip, a white-bar glitch in Photoshop 2021, and Lightroom failing its installer check. The developer also noted that drag and drop did not work quite right, possibly a Wayland issue (OMG! Ubuntu). Do not assume that a feature that works in Windows works here.
What you need
- Your own Adobe account and license. The installer comes from Adobe. Nothing here replaces a license.
Best Photoshop alternatives that run on Linux
If you do not need Photoshop itself, these tools run natively or in a browser. Pick by what you do most, not by a feature checklist.
| Tool | Best for | PSD files | Get it on Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIMP 3.2 | Photo retouching, layers, masks, compositing | Opens PSD files; version 3.2 (March 2026) broadened PSD compatibility. | Software center, or Flathub: flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP |
| PhotoSuite | Photoshop users who want the same layout and shortcuts | PSD is its native format (developer’s claim). New in September 2026, version 0.9. | Official .deb and .rpm: see PhotoSuite on Linux |
| Krita | Digital painting, illustration, concept art | Opens and saves PSD files. | AppImage from krita.org, or Flathub: flatpak install flathub org.kde.krita |
| Photopea | Quick edits to PSD files, no install | Opens and saves PSD files in the browser. Not affiliated with Adobe. | Open photopea.com in any modern browser. Free with ads, with an optional paid plan. |
| darktable | RAW photo development (a Lightroom-style workflow) | A RAW developer, not a layer-based editor; pair it with GIMP or Krita. | Software center, or darktable.org |
| Affinity (by Canva) | Photo, design, and layout in one app | We have not checked PSD support in the current app. Free on Windows and macOS. | No native Linux version. Unofficial Wine-based builds exist and are experimental: see Affinity on Linux. |

Cracked installers, license generators, and “Photoshop Linux .deb, .AppImage, or .exe” downloads on third-party sites are very likely malware, and they break Adobe’s terms. Take installers only from Adobe’s own site. If cost is the problem, GIMP, Krita, and Photopea are free to use.
Which Linux distro for Photoshop or its alternatives?
The Wine route depends on getting patched Wine and recent graphics drivers, so a distribution that updates often helps. This is our reasoning, not a tested result. For GIMP, Krita, and Photopea, any of these works well. Order follows the live popularity ranking.

Photoshop on Linux: common questions
Is there a Photoshop for Linux?
No. Adobe sells Photoshop only for Windows and macOS, and its system requirements do not list Linux. Since January 2026, patched builds of Wine can install and run Photoshop 2021 and 2025 on Linux, but this is a community effort that Adobe does not support.
Can you run Photoshop on Linux with Wine?
Reportedly yes, for Photoshop 2021 and 2025, with patched Wine builds. The patches fix the Creative Cloud installer, which reportedly had not worked in Wine since 2018. It is experimental: the developer’s issue tracker lists crashes and display glitches, and Adobe will not help if something breaks.
Does Photoshop work on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Fedora?
Not natively on any distribution. The Wine route depends on the Wine build and graphics drivers rather than the distribution, so a distribution that updates often makes it easier to get patched Wine and recent drivers. A Windows virtual machine works on all of them.
Is Photoshop on the web available on Linux?
Adobe’s requirements for Photoshop on the web list Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS, and supported browsers such as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Linux is not listed, so Adobe does not promise it works there. Check Adobe’s current requirements page before paying for a plan for this purpose.
What is the best Photoshop alternative for Linux?
GIMP 3.2 is the closest all-round photo editor and opens PSD files. Krita is the better choice for painting and illustration. Photopea runs in a browser and opens PSD files with little setup. Which is best depends on whether you retouch photos, paint, or just need to edit an existing PSD.
Can GIMP open PSD files?
Yes. GIMP opens PSD files, and GIMP 3.2 improved PSD compatibility. Complex files that use Photoshop-only features, such as some adjustment layers, smart objects, and effects, may not look identical, so keep the original PSD and test an important file first.
Is it legal to run Photoshop on Linux?
Wine is legal software, and you need your own valid Adobe license to use Photoshop. What is not safe or legal is a cracked copy, a license generator, or any “Photoshop for Linux” download from a third-party site. Get installers only from Adobe.
Will Adobe release Photoshop for Linux?
Adobe has not announced one, and we found no statement from Adobe about the 2026 Wine patches. If that changes, this page will be updated and the change recorded in the changelog below.
How we researched this page
- What we did. We compared Adobe’s published requirements, the Phoronix and OMG! Ubuntu reports on the 2026 Wine patches, the patch developer’s repository and issue tracker, the WinApps documentation, and the release information of each alternative. Every claim above links its source.
- What we did not do. We have not run Photoshop under Wine or in a virtual machine ourselves. There are no benchmarks or hands-on results on this page, and we say so where a statement is our own reasoning.
- How fresh it is. Last checked Oct 1, 2026. Wine and the patches move quickly, so the date in the status table matters more than any claim of “works”. Adobe’s pages and several press sites could not be opened directly from our research environment, so statements from them come from excerpts of the cited pages; check the originals for current terms.
