TrueNAS

Serious ZFS storage, free

TrueNAS Community Edition is the free edition of the storage system iXsystems also sells to businesses. It began as FreeNAS in 2005; since the 25.04 release the Debian-based line (formerly SCALE) is simply called TrueNAS. It is built around OpenZFS, which checksums every block and makes snapshots cheap, and it runs apps as Docker containers from a catalog.

Strengths

  • ZFS protects against silent data corruption and makes snapshots easy
  • Free, with no drive or user limits
  • Large community and very detailed documentation

Trade-offs

  • ZFS pools prefer matching drives, so growing storage takes planning
  • Needs at least 8 GB of RAM and a separate boot drive
  • More settings and storage words to learn than the beginner systems

Local AI on TrueNAS

No built-in AI features. Ollama, Open WebUI and vLLM install from the app catalog. How far you get depends on your memory: see what each kind of hardware can run.
